The Spinning Time

Once upon a time, in a small village lived a student who had a dream to be a civil servant. To make his dream come true, he left for the capital city to take a state exam. Somewhere along the tiring journey, he stopped for a while to have a rest. While repelling his fatigue, he daydreamed.

He had some worries concerning his own ability, mixed with the wonderful hope of being accepted as a civil servant. In the middle of his beautiful daydream, an old man approached him and said, “Young man, it seems that you are not from this region. Where are you going?”

"I’m on my way to the capital city to take the state exam, sir."
“I was watching you daydreaming. What was it about?”
“Oh, nothing serious, sir. I just want to work as a civil servant. But I am afraid of not being accepted.”

Their conversation grew more and more interesting. After a discussion, suddenly the old man took something out of his own pocket. Then he gave it to the student, saying, “Maybe this is just the thing you need, son!”

“Hah! A top? How can a top make my dream come true, sir?” asked the student curiously. The old man replied, “Young man, this is a time top. If you spin the top to the right you will come to the future, to the time and condition you want to be in, and vice versa. “Soon after the student received the top , the old man went away.

The student immediately tested the truth of the old man’s words. Keeping the idea of being successful in the state exam, he spun the top to the right. Suddenly, he found himself in front of the state exam notice board. He found his name on it. The student was elated. But this feeling did not last long. He wanted to start working in the government as soon as possible. Feeling impatient, he spun the top to the right one more time. Right away, the student found himself working in the government office.

Alas! The pleasure as a civil servant also did not last for a long time. Now he wished to be an executive. So, he spun his top again. At a blink of time, he was in that position he wanted. Now he became addicted. He kept spinning and spinning the top to make the time pass as he wished. Avoiding problems that hindered his life became his habit.

The top spun and spun. The time flew and flew. In no time the student grew old, facing death. Regret filled his heart. “How short and meaningless my life has been. Oh, I wish this spinning top would bring me back to my past.” In his desperation, the student spun the top to the left. Suddenly he was awake from his sleep. All those events were merely a dream.

The student was happy and grateful that it was just a dream. Then he made a vow to himself to keep struggling and keep enjoying the process to get what he wanted in life.

Fail and Fight Again

One fine afternoon, there was a young man in a park. We could clearly see sadness, disappointment, and frustration on his face. He walked slowly with his head down. Occasionally, he would sit down and sigh many times, as if he did not know what to do.

When his mind was somewhere in the clouds, suddenly his eyes caught a movement in the branches nearby. A spider was making its web there. Being very upset, this idle man took a twig. He destroyed the spider web without mercy to let out his frustrated feelings.

Afterwards, he focused his attention to see what the spider would do. Deep in his heart, he wanted to know the spider would do. Would the spider run hurriedly away or would it make a new web somewhere else? His curiosity soon got the answer. Soon the spider returned to its previous place, starting to repeat the same activities: crawling, spinning, and jumping. It spun every single thread from the very beginning. Each time, the web got wider and wider. The spider worked tirelessly until a new web came into being.

The young man watched the spider working vigorously repairing and making its new tab. Then again, he destroyed this second web. Feeling satisfied but full of curiosity, he sat and watched the spider’s reaction. What would it do after its web was destroyed for the second time?

For the third time, the spider repeated its activities from the very beginning – vigorously it crawled, spun, and jumpe. With every single thread produced from its body, the spider spun a new web bit by bit.

The young man watched and observed the spider building its third web. But suddenly a thought struck him! No matter how many times he had destroyed and ruined the web, the spider would build it again. The spirit of this very small creature working tirelessly opened his mind.

It brought a felling of embarrassment to his heart. There he was in park – feeling depressed and restless after just one failure. So, having seen what the spider did, he promised himself, “it is not proper for me to complain and feel desperate just because I have failed this time. I must stand up again. I must strive and be ready to overcome any failure I face, like this tiny spirited spider which build up its new web every time the web was destroyed.” The young man immediately stood up, and made a resolution to work harder. If necessary, he would start again from the very beginning. Never give up!
